August

We’ve bought the farm!Yes, we have finally purchased just over 300 acres of prime grazing land about 20 km from us. We have been looking for a few years now for the right property to continue to expand our stud and breeding enterprise and believe we have found the perfect place. We will have our hay grown there and our youngstock will grow out there also. With a cattle feedlot right next door we hope to have our horses see more cows! Our major base will still be in Northam.

The Quack is Back!!Well almost anyway… as above, we have an extra mortgage now and so all ‘luxury’ spending is limited. So we have had to bring Duck N Lethal home from QLD for a while but hope to have him back competing with Pete Comiskey as soon as we can. A big thanks to Pete for all of his help with Quack.

Out and About. Most of our competition horses are having a bit of a spell (or a foal!) but will be starting their work very soon. At the moment we are thoroughly enjoying starting our younger horses, with some being set for a career in drafting with others looking to go cutting. We have also recently sold a couple of very well bred babies and look forward to seeing them competing here and in the eastern states soon.

Foaling season is nearly here.We are getting set for another very busy breeding season but first comes the most exciting part, seeing the foals arrive that we have made for our clients and friends! It is very rewarding to deliver foals from mares that have been declared problem breeders or foals from stallions long deceased, therefore preserving those genetics. Our 2 new foaling pens are enclosed, safe, well lit and under constant video and alarm surveillance. If you have any queries or questions about foaling, please dont hesitate to call, we are very used to the frantic 3am call and can talk you through most foalings easily!!

Stud News.As most are aware, Spin on Command is not getting any younger! This year he will be 26 years young. Everyone who has a Spin horse knows how quiet, sound and versatile they are. This could be the last chance to breed to WA’s most influential QH sire. Contact us now to enquire about our chilled semen offers and multiple mare discounts.

Other news.Stud season is fast approaching and construction of our new yards continues. Our old yards were a design trial that worked so well that we never got around to making it permanent! But now we will have safe, purpose built stallion yards, mare and foal yards and weather proof foaling down pens.
We have a wide selection of stallions being collected here this year, it looks as though we will be very busy with the mare side and foaling down spaces are filling fast. If you are considering breeding this year, contact us to discuss your requirements and reserve a place.

Farrier NewsOur newly refurbished barn is a big success and the coffee machine is working overtime in this weather!
Some of our clients are a bit concerned that the bar isnt fully stocked as yet…be patient. Ross still wants Foxtel in the barn, after humbugging for 5 years you would think he’d be over it by now.
One upside to this very dry winter is that the incidence of fee induced laminitis is very low. But as seen in this picture (left) seperation is yet another condition to be aware of and manage at this time of year.
The wet/dry weather can creat all sorts of problems in the feet, dont hesitate to call if you need advice and assistance.
